The city had acquired land near the intersection of Gary Pirkle Park and Spruce Street. The city council decided to name the new park after Gary Pirkle, a former city councilman and mayor who had passed away. See more here.
The park was designed to be a community gathering place with a playground, pavilion, and walking trails. The playground equipment was installed in the early 1990s, and the pavilion and walking trails were completed in the mid-1990s. In the late 1990s, the city began to develop the rest of the park. The first development phase included constructing a parking lot, a baseball field, and a basketball court.
